The museum of Fine Arts - in German: Museum der Bildenden Künste – opened in 1848. It includes paintings, sculptures and graphics and belongs to the most important art museums in Germany.
First the museum was located at the Augustusplatz, but this building was destroyed in 1943 by the attacks of the Allies. Fortunately most of the exhibits had been removed to a safe place in advance. After the war for 61 years the museum moved from one temporary home to another until in 2004 it got a classy and modern new home.
Today's collection consists of 3.500 paintings, 1.000 sculptures and more than 60.000 graphics and ranges from the late Middle Ages to Contemporary Art. Highlights of the collection are works by Caspar David Friedrich, Max Klinger and Max Beckmann and lots of brilliant paintings from the Leipziger Schule.
Besides the constant collection the museum also shows changing exhibitions.
