The Stasimuseum illustrates quite a dark chapter of East-German history. For 40 years the building inhabited the headquarters of the “Staatssicherheit” (Stasi) in Leipzig. The Stasi was the secret service and secret police in the DDR, which systematically kept their citizens under surveillance to control them and to reveal and silence any kind of opposition and regime criticism. In the museum all the offices and interiors are kept in the original state of 1989 when the doors of the Stasi were finally closed and so you can see the function and method of operation of the Stasi at first hand.
