The concert hall Gewandhaus Leipzig was opened in 1981 and is situated opposite to the opera right at the Augustus Square in the heart of Leipzig. World famous is the ceiling fresco in the foyer, painted by Sighard Gille, the Mendelssohn hall and the big hall which seats almost 2000 people. And of course the internationally popular Gewandhaus Orchestra which had great conductors such as Kurt Masur or Herbert Blomstedt. At the moment it is headed by the Italian Riccardo Chailly. The orchestra also includes the Gewandhaus Quartet which, established in 1809, is the oldest string quartet in the world.
