In 1989 St. Nikolai Church in Leipzig was the starting point of the peaceful revolution and the following political upheavals in the former GDR, which finally led to the reunification of Germany. Therefore it's one of the most important symbols of the city. Built in the 12th century in Romanesque style right in the heart of the city centre, it always played a significant role in Leipzig's history. In 1539 Martin Luther delivered a sermon here and by that started Reformation in Leipzig. In 1724 Johann Sebastian Bach gave his first performance of the "Johannes-Passion" in St. Nikolai.
