The first opera in Leipzig was opened in 1693 at the Brühl and it went through many world premieres.
In 1868 the New Theatre opened at the Augustusplatz . It was used for operas and plays and alongside with works from Mozart, Weber and Gluck the Leipzig opera especially cherished the works of Richard Wagner. After the building had been destroyed in the Second World War during the attacks of the Allied Forces, today's opera was built in the 1950's. To follow old traditions the re-opening was celebrated by Richard Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". Today the opera includes the Singer Ensemble, the Ballet, the Opera Choir and the Musical Comedy.
