The Völkerschlachtdenkmal - in Leipzig fondly called "Völki" - is the biggest monument in Europe and one of the town's landmarks. It reminds of the Battle of Nations in the year 1813 when Napoleon was defeated by the allies Austria, Russia, Prussia and many other European Nations. More than half a million soldiers fought on the battlefields around Leipzig and about 120.000 people lost their lives. In 1913 the Völki was inaugurated and today people from all over Europe come together every year to re-act the battle with historic costumes and weapons in memory of the victims.
