Colditz Castle, for the first time mentioned in 1046, has a turbulent history. In the Medieval ages it was a very important fortress for the German emperors and seat of power in central Germany. After that Colditz Castle became residence for the Saxon electors and hunting lodge of the Saxon king August the Strong. In the 19th century it was a prison and a mental hospital and since 1933 the Nazis used it as a concentration camp for German opponents of the Nazi-regime and after 1940 as a detention camp for high-ranking officers of the British Army. The local museum shows an exhibition about the many creative escape attempts of the officers. The castle is open daily and offers guided tours.
